Avian influenza (H5N1), or bird flu, has been in the news due to Massachusetts outbreaks in wild geese, swans, and backyard poultry. This contagious virus mainly affects birds but can infect other animals like cats and dogs through contact with infected birds, their droppings, or contaminated environments. Risk to humans remains low, however, pet owners should take precautions.

How Can Pets Be Affected?

  • Cats are particularly susceptible to avian flu and can become infected by eating contaminated raw meat or preying on infected birds.

  • Dogs are at lower risk but can still be exposed through contact with infected wildlife or environments.

Symptoms

  • fever

  • lethargy

  • respiratory issues

  • neurological signs like tremors or seizures.

How to Protect Your Pets

  1. Keep Pets Indoors: Cats should remain indoors, and dogs should be supervised during outdoor activities to prevent contact with wild birds or their droppings.

  2. Avoid Raw Diets: Do not feed your pets raw poultry or unpasteurized milk, as these can harbor the virus.

  3. Practice Good Hygiene: Wash your hands thoroughly after handling birds or cleaning pet areas.

  4. Report Sick or Dead Birds: If you find sick or dead birds, do not handle them. Report them to the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife [1][6].

For Backyard Poultry Owners

If you keep chickens or other poultry:

  • Corral your flock to prevent contact with wild birds.

  • Eliminate bird feeders and baths near your coop.

  • Regularly clean equipment and avoid sharing tools with other poultry owners.
